Vargyas Gorge and the Orbán Balázs Cave
“Nature has gathered so much greatness and so much captivating beauty here that one can hardly take it all in.”
– wrote Balázs Orbán about the Vargyas Gorge nearly a century and a half ago.
The Vargyas Gorge is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular natural attractions in Transylvania and within Székely Land. Its caves, limestone cliffs, unique rock formations, and rich wildlife create an unforgettable experience.
The caves have served as shelters for humans since prehistoric times, as evidenced by numerous archaeological findings. Today, visitors come to admire the beauty of this remarkable place. Although access used to be difficult and information was limited, the gorge has now become a popular destination for hikers and campers.
About the Gorge
The Vargyas Gorge offers breathtaking scenery: towering rock walls, a mountain stream flowing through the valley, and a cave system formed during the Ice Age, stretching approximately 4 km.
The most well-known caves include:
Harminchármas Cave
Lócsűr Cave
Kőcsűr Cave
Spelaeus Cave (“the thousand-star cave”)
The largest and most famous is the Orbán Balázs Cave, accessible via iron ladders.
In total, 125 caves have been discovered, with a combined length of approximately 7,410 meters. These caves are located at heights ranging from 5 to 200 meters above the stream.
The area is home to remarkable biodiversity: out of the 30 bat species found in Romania, 17 live here.
Speleologists describe the atmosphere as follows:
“Those who have not experienced the world of silence cannot understand it.”
Route: From Vargyas to Kőalja
marking: red cross
duration: approx. 2–2.5 hours
The gorge can be reached by following the marked forest road along the right bank of the Vargyas stream. The starting point is clearly signposted, including markers indicating the protected area.
At the confluence with the Hídegáșzó stream, turn left (the road crosses the stream and continues along its valley), then proceed towards the gorge to reach the area called Kőalja.
Route: From Kőalja to the Orbán Balázs Cave
marking: blue cross
duration: approx. 30 minutes
From Kőalja, several routes can be explored, but the most popular leads to the Orbán Balázs Cave.
Follow the blue cross marking, cross the first suspension bridge, then continue along the stream. You will reach a junction towards Kőcsűr, where you can also find the Bear Spring, a source of drinking water.
If time allows, it is worth exploring the Kőcsűr area as well: following the red dot marking, a short climb leads to impressive rock formations.
Returning to the main path, the trail crosses the stream and continues to Felsziget. Along the way, you will pass striking formations such as Nagy-Kőgörgeteg and the massive Csudálókő rock.
Soon you reach the Lócsűr Cave. From here, a side trail leads to Csala Tower and Tatárlik Cave, offering a beautiful panoramic viewpoint.
Cross the bridge opposite the cave and continue for about 10 minutes to reach the entrance of the Orbán Balázs Cave, the largest cave in the gorge.
The return follows the same route.
