The Ghiocelul Cave – Munticel Natural Reserve
Distance: 4 km
Elevation gain: 300 m
Duration: 3–4 hours (with breaks)
Looking for something beyond mass tourism? Craving nature and adventure? This tour is made for you!
The Ghiocelul Cave, located in the Munticel limestone massif, is a relatively recent discovery, found in 1973 by children collecting snowdrops – hence its name.
The hike starts near Bicaz Chei. We follow a forest road beneath the eastern wall of Piatra Glodului, then continue across scenic alpine meadows.
Soon we reach a forested rocky step where the cave entrance is hidden beneath a natural rock portal. Entering through a 3-meter opening, we arrive in the impressive main chamber filled with stalactites and stalagmites.
The main hall is approximately 30×40 meters. In the southeastern section lies Lacul Zânelor, while about 35 meters away we find the mysterious Cemetery of bears.
After exploring the cave, we climb to the ridge of Piatra Glodului. The ascent is moderate, and the panoramic view is among the most spectacular in the Eastern Carpathians.
After a short break, we descend toward Cheile Sugaului, a small but wild and scenic gorge about 80 meters long.
