Guided visit to the Ornithological Refuge in Sanpaul - Birdwatching experience!

For birdwatching, we recommend visiting the area between spring and autumn, as during winter the lakes freeze and the number of birds decreases significantly. In summer, mainly nesting species can be observed, while in spring and autumn migratory birds frequently appear, including rare visitors.
The route is easy, with no significant elevation differences, although in some sections the terrain may be wet or marshy. The trail circles the lakes, and with the help of binoculars and spotting scopes, we will discover the fascinating and colorful world of birds.
Sanpaul Ornithological Refuge
The Sanpaul Ornithological Refuge is protected at both county and national level and is part of the Natura 2000 site ROSPA0027 – Dealurile Homoroadelor.
The nature reserve covers approximately 210 hectares and includes the fishponds along the Homorodul Mare valley as well as the surrounding areas. The altitude ranges between 440 meters and 718 meters.
Before the ponds were created, the area was dominated by marshes, reed beds and open water surfaces, and was traditionally used by locals as pasture and hayfields.
Biodiversity
A total of 267 bird species have been identified in this area, which is remarkable on a European level. During spring and autumn migration periods, numerous water birds and birds of prey stop here.
The diversity of habitats provides nesting conditions for more than 100 species, including ducks, herons, egrets, warblers and various wagtail subspecies. Reed beds and marshlands are important molting areas for ducks and resting places for starlings, swallows and other species.
Natural values
Among the geological features of interest are the salt springs and the salt layer located close to the surface.

• Keep noise to a minimum during the visit
• Pets are allowed only on a leash
• The use of binoculars and cameras is highly recommended

Bird photography from observation hides
In the quietest area of the refuge, two special birdwatching hides have been installed: one facing the water and the other facing the shoreline. These are equipped with reflective glass, allowing observation and photography without disturbing the birds.
Typical species include water and shore birds such as herons, egrets, lapwings, sandpipers, snipes and various duck species. One hide can be used simultaneously by a maximum of 2 people.
