The Reverse Flow Stream from Izvoare!
“The reverse flow stream” – an incredible reality or just an illusion of the mind?

We guide you to the so-called “still stream” near Izvoare, named by locals because it seems to have no natural flow. In fact, it is an artificial channel, built in the mid-20th century to provide water for grazing animals on the plateau and for the local households.

Over time, a small settlement also developed near the water, called Irigyvesze. The water was diverted from the Izvoare stream up onto the plateau, and due to the very slight gradient, visitors descending toward the valley often get the impression that the water is flowing uphill.

It is fascinating how the water was redirected along a rock into a ditch. The channel is well maintained, with a clearly visible footpath running alongside it, approximately 1.5–2 km long. Since the hike begins with crossing the stream, it is recommended to bring spare shoes or wear rubber boots.

Access:
After passing the junction leading to Harghita Madaras, continue for about 0.5 km towards Fertő Peak. You will reach a junction known as Kecskevész, where you can park your vehicle.

From here, continue on foot in the same direction. After approximately 1 km, the road begins to climb more steeply. On the left side, you will find a sign indicating the “Reverse Flow Stream.” Next to it, a path leads down to the streambed, where the channel can be found.

Discover this unique local attraction for yourself!

Note:
This program can be perfectly combined on the same day with another nearby attraction: the water-powered sawmill in Izvoare.
