Zetea Nature Trail
The Zetea Nature Trail offers the opportunity to explore the natural, historical and cultural values of Deság Hill, located on the Harghita Plateau, during an easy and enjoyable hike.

Length: 3 km (circular route)
Elevation gain: 233 m
Duration: approx. 2.5–3 hours
Marking: blue “Z” in a white circle
Type: historical, botanical, zoological and geological

Trail overview
The trail starts at the Deság junction, 5 km from the center of Zetea and 1 km from Subcetate, where the first information board is located.

In the area between the junction and Zetea once stood the ancient settlement of Cseleháza (12th–13th century). The marked route follows a gravel road that descends into the valley of the Târnava Mare River.

After crossing the bridge, you reach the southern edge of Subcetate and enter the narrow Deság Valley.
On the left rises Dealul Cetății (Castle Hill, 801 m), and on the right Tölgyes-uru (860 m).

Route description
Following the markings, you soon reach a junction (Station 2 – Geological information), from where the trail continues along a forest path.

After a gradual climb that becomes steeper, you reach a rocky ridge (Station 3 – Rock Garden), where the panorama begins to open up. The higher you go, the more impressive the views become.

From the ridge you can see:

the valley of the Târnava Mare
the villages of Subcetate and Zetea
surrounding hills and forests
in clear weather, the distant Făgăraș Mountains
Take care near the cliff edge!

Zetea Fortress
At Station 4, you can find the barely visible remains of an ancient fortress, now protected as an archaeological site.

During World War II, military fortifications were built here, and traces of them can still be seen today.

Optional detour
If time allows, you can take a short detour to a fireplace area along a path marked with a yellow stripe (old and barely visible marking). The same path leads back to the main trail.

Descent and viewpoints
After a longer descent through dense spruce forest, you reach Station 5 (Viewpoint), offering a beautiful panorama over Subcetate and the Gurghiu Mountains.

Continuing along a forest path, you eventually reach a meadow, where a large rockslide can be seen above you.

Descending further, you arrive at Station 6 (Wildlife), then reach the bell tower, where the circular route ends. From here, you return to the main road via a gravel path.

Important information
wear proper hiking shoes or boots
bring sufficient drinking water (no springs along the trail)
watch out for vipers
avoid the cliff edge
in case of thunderstorms, leave the ridge immediately
In winter, the trail becomes more difficult and requires proper equipment and warm clothing.

Geological overview (short)
Deság Hill lies at the boundary between the volcanic Harghita Plateau and the Târnava hills.
Its formation is linked to tectonic and volcanic activity during the Miocene and Pliocene periods.

The area includes:

sedimentary layers
volcanic agglomerates
andesite rocks transported by streams
Over time, rivers carved the plateau into valleys and flat areas known locally as “lazuri.”

Vegetation and landscape
The area offers remarkable scenery and an interesting temperature inversion effect:

in valleys: dense conifer forests
on sunny slopes: beech and oak forests

Legend of Zetea Fortress
According to legend, Zetea was a powerful pagan lord who built his fortress to resist conversion to Christianity.

After a curse and a thunderous event, the fortress collapsed, burying him and his daughters beneath it. The treasure is said to remain hidden beneath the ruins.

It is believed that on Saint George’s Night, the gate to the treasure opens briefly—but those driven by greed never manage to escape in time.
