Racoș Natural Reserve – A Unique Volcanic Landscape
Racoș is located about 70 km from Odorheiu Secuiesc, in the Racoș Gorge. The village takes its name from the Șoșcuț stream (formerly called Racoș stream). It was once a thriving center of basalt mining.

Today, the area is known for its spectacular natural attractions: black basalt columns, a lake formed in a former volcanic crater, and a striking red scoria cone. Together, these form one of the most impressive protected natural areas in Transylvania.

Highlights of the visit
Basalt Columns
As you follow a winding path upward, you leave behind the remains of the old quarry and arrive at the impressive basalt columns, now part of a protected natural reserve.

These formations are 0.6–1.2 million years old and were created by cooling lava. The tall, polygonal columns rise dramatically, creating a unique and almost surreal landscape.

Fenyős Lake
Just a few hundred meters away lies Fenyős Lake, formed in the place where lava was once extracted from the volcanic crater.

Unlike Lake Saint Anne, this lake was shaped by human activity, but its water comes entirely from precipitation. The deep blue water contrasts beautifully with the surrounding volcanic rocks.

The Red Volcanic Crater – “Hell’s Gate”
A short walk leads to the red scoria cone called Hegyes (612 m), often referred to as the “Gate of Hell”.

Walking along the edge of the crater offers breathtaking views and a glimpse into the powerful volcanic past of the region. The layers of red volcanic ash and rock create a dramatic and unforgettable scenery.

You may also spot various volcanic bombs – rock formations created during eruptions, shaped while flying through the air.

Traditional Wooden Grave Markers
Below the volcanic site lies the local cemetery, known for its carved wooden grave markers placed at the foot of the graves.

Their colors reflect the age of the deceased:

black for elderly
black-white or brown-black for adults
red for young people
This unique tradition is part of the rich cultural heritage of the region.

Sükösd–Bethlen Castle
In the upper part of the village stands the Sükösd–Bethlen Castle, built in 1625 in Transylvanian Renaissance style.

Although partially damaged during the 1848 revolution and later neglected, restoration work has begun, and the castle still reflects the grandeur of its past.
