Sugau Cave – Underground Adventure in the Eastern Carpathians
Sugau Cave is located in the Giurgeu Mountains, on the southwestern slope of the 1568 m high Sipos Peak. It can be accessed from the village of Voslobeni, situated on the road connecting Gheorgheni and Miercurea Ciuc.

Cave Description
Sugau Cave is a four-level system.
The lowest level forms the active, water-bearing section with one entrance, while the three upper levels are dry galleries with two entrances.

The cave developed in dolomite and crystalline limestone along tectonic faults and fractures.
The explored passages measure over 1,020 meters, though new narrow corridors and small chambers are still being discovered.

A stream flows out of the cave with an average discharge of 5 liters/second, and the water temperature is very low (5–7°C).

Due to temperature and air pressure differences, strong and constant air currents can be observed:

In summer, air flows outward from the wet passages
In winter, from the upper dry galleries
This airflow, combined with the sound of the water, creates a whispering noise – which gave the cave its name: “Sugau” (Whispering Cave).

Legend of Sugau Cave
According to local legend collected by historian Márton Tarisznyás, the cave is connected to another cave near Three Springs.

It is said that “gold drips” inside the cave, collected in buckets.
In seven years, three buckets fill with gold – but only a few can ever retrieve it.

In the late 19th century, two men and a woman came searching for it.
They appeared only at specific times: every seventh year, on the Friday before Pentecost or on St. John’s Night (June 24).

To avoid being recognized, they even shoed their horses backwards.
Many tried to catch them, but no one knew exactly when the seven years would end.
