About Dârjiu
Dârjiu is located in a picturesque hilly region in southwestern Harghita County, near the borders of Brașov and Mureș counties. The village is one of the most unique settlements in Transylvania, known for its preserved traditions and remarkable historical heritage.

Today, visitors from all over the world come here to explore the famous fortified church, often referred to as the “bacon church”.

The Dârjiu Unitarian Fortified Church (UNESCO Site)
Since 2006, the fortified church of Dârjiu has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage, being the only Hungarian monument in Romania included on this list.

The complex consists of three main parts:

the church
the surrounding defensive walls
the tower (38 meters high)

The Tower
The tower stands slightly off alignment compared to the fortress walls, suggesting that an earlier defensive structure may have existed.

Current height: 38 meters
Raised by 10 meters in 1866

The “Bacon Tradition” – A Unique Living Heritage
Inside the fortress walls, locals have been storing bacon and smoked meat in the bastions for centuries.

Originally, the storage rooms were used to keep:

grain supplies
tools
household goods
Over time, they became dedicated spaces for preserving food.

This tradition is:
✔ still alive today
✔ community-based
✔ unique worldwide

Visitors can also taste these local specialties.

Grain Storage and Community Life
The fortress also housed:

wooden grain containers (hombars)
traditional measuring units (20L, 10L, 5L)
These reflect the organized and self-sufficient life of the medieval community.

The Fortress Well
A special feature is the defensive well located in the southwestern corner of the fortress.

Traditionally:

only this well’s water could be used for baptisms
the water is still clean and drinkable
