Traditional Water-Powered Sawmill – The Living Heritage of a Sekler Craft
Located in Izvoare, the traditional water-powered sawmill is a unique cultural and educational attraction that brings back to life an ancient craft that has almost completely disappeared today.

The project was initiated by the Municipality of Zetea with the goal of preserving and presenting the region’s traditional technologies. The result is a living mini-museum that not only keeps the memory of traditional woodworking alive, but also serves as an educational and tourist attraction.

The sawmill stands on the site of a former water-powered sawmill mentioned in a land registry document dating back to the late 19th century. Although no original photographs or detailed plans have survived, local stories and memories confirmed the existence of the old sawmill.

At the beginning of the 20th century, more than sixteen water-powered sawmills operated in the area, many of them jointly owned by relatives and local communities. The mechanisms remained almost unchanged since medieval times and were mainly built from hardwood with very little iron.

In many cases, the working mechanisms of the sawmills were dismantled and moved closer to the forests as logging areas expanded farther from the villages. While the buildings often remained in place, the essential parts of the machinery followed the raw material source.

Over time, damaged parts were replaced with identical components, and the buildings evolved according to the architectural style and financial possibilities of each era. Wood always remained the defining material of these traditional constructions, reflecting the local saying: “We were made from dust, but we live from wood.”

Once considered cutting-edge technology, today the water-powered sawmill serves as a living reminder of the region’s industrial and cultural past. The project was created to preserve the spirit of these traditional mechanisms while presenting them through modern educational and tourism concepts.

Today, this is the only fully functional traditional water-powered sawmill in central Romania. Visitors can see the mechanism operating live and gain insight into the world of traditional woodworking and rural engineering.

The traditional water-powered sawmill can be visited only with prior reservation.
